Botswana 'survival' September

Elzas (part 1: the boat lift and
the tunnels) |
To recover from the Botswana survival
we are going for a week to the Elzas in northern France. We rented a Penichette
1107 at Locaboat

.
Somewhat bigger then necessary, but there were no smaller boats available

.
Next day we leave and we pass some
locks

.
They are opened up for us after we talked into the intercom. It is a very
nice envirenment
.
After two hours we enter the "Plan Incliné"
or the boat lift at Artzviller
.
The lift has a height of 44.55 meter and replaces the 17 original locks.
It is an impressive sight. A large bathtub with counter weights
.
We are rising

and are subject of conversation on the boats with the visitors
.
After the lift we enter two tunnels
. The 1st tunnel
is nearly 2,5 kilometer and the 2nd around 500 meter. They are very narrow
and there is only one-way trafic. We can enter the 1st tunnel at once

but have to wait about one hour for the 2nd. We sail
that day until the village Xouaxange
.
There is nothing in the village to see and we make a biking trip
.
There are more nothing-to-see villages
.
The sailing area is great
,
however.
