Elzas (part 2: Sarralbe) |
Next day we leave early. It is a
misty morning

.
We pass the village of Gondrexange
(also the name of our boat) and some lakes (Étangs)
.
Then we come to the "Canal des
Houillères de la Sarre". Yesterday we announced ourselves to the
lockkeeper. There are 15 locks in the canal still operated by hand. You
have to ask for a lockkeeper who will come to you in a renault 5 and who
will stay with you for the rest of the day. The next hours we are closing
and opening locks

.
Some locks are less than 500 metres apart!
We pass the Albe Canal Bridge
.
It is an aquaduct with water (The Canal des Houillières…) over water
(The Albe).
It is build in 1867.
Sarralbe is a somewhat larger village. A church
,
a tower
nice streets and bridges
over the Sarre.
On the way back the next day we end up
somewhere in "the middle of nowhere". We make a biking trip to the medieval
city of Fénétrange. There is a château
,
a watermill, museum and some other nice buildings
.
It did sound very promising. There was only one small problem. Everywhere
in the Elzas everything is closed on monday, except for Fénétrange.
There everything is closed on tuesday. Guess what day it is..... Yes, tuesday!
At least we did like the biking trip
.
